How to Reduce Minecraft Server Lag by Adjusting View & Simulation Distance

Lowering your server’s view and simulation distance is one of the easiest ways to improve performance and reduce lag. You can do this by editing the server.properties file.

1. Open your server’s Control Panel
   Log into your hosting panel and head to the Files section.
2. Locate server.properties
   Find the file named server.properties and click on it to open the editor.
3. Adjust the view distance
   Look for the line: view-distance= Change the number after the equals sign to your preferred value.
   • Valid values range from 1 to 32
   • For best performance, it’s recommended to keep this around 10–12 or lower, as higher values can significantly increase server load.
4. Adjust the simulation distance
   Next, find: simulation-distance= Set this to your desired number (also 1 to 32). Lower values reduce how many chunks actively process entities, redstone, and mobs, which helps with lag.
5. Save and restart
   Save the file, then restart your server to apply the changes.
